Major archaeological excavation of non-adult necropolis completed

17/04/2021 - Major archaeological excavation of non-adult necropolis completed

ERA has completed the archaeological excavation of a necropolis of non-adults, most probably the one with the largest number of individuals in the world. This cemetery, omitted from known written sources, was located in the cloister of the Convent of São Domingos in Lisbon.

Almost 3,000 burials, from the end of the 18th century to the beginning of the 19th century, were identified and studied at the site. The overwhelming majority of the individuals buried there were between 26 weeks and 1 year old.

The excavation took more than a year and involved a large team from ERA, including around twenty archaeologists and twenty biological anthropologists. The research process will continue and it is expected that the results will be extremely important for our knowledge of the Lisbon population.
