Restoration work on the Imperfect Chapels of the Monastery of Batalha completed

02/09/2026 - Restoration work on the Imperfect Chapels of the Monastery of Batalha completed

The ERA Arqueologia project on the Imperfect Chapels of the Monastery of Batalha, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Portugal's most iconic cultural heritage locations, has now been completed.

It was an intense, challenging and deeply rewarding project. For almost a year, our team tackled the complexities of working on a monument of unparalleled historical and artistic value, with the expertise, dedication and rigour that define our work.

A project of excellence

Our team worked daily to conserve the monument, restore the legibility of its features and recover its original character, whilst respecting the historical materials and techniques. The work focused primarily on the detailed treatment of stonework, the preservation of traditional mortars, and the restoration of roofs.

As the work progressed, the results became increasingly visible. The Imperfect Chapels have now been cleaned, treated and stabilised, revealing their original appearance more clearly. Visitors can now explore the entire interior circuit and fully appreciate the artistic richness of this unique building.

A journey marked by challenges

During the project, Storm Kristin, which struck Portugal on 28 January 2026, caused significant damage to areas of the Monastery of Batalha, also affecting the Imperfect Chapels. Faced with this situation, we reaffirmed our responsibility to safeguard this unique heritage, redoubling the technical effort and scientific care that a monument of this importance demands. We conducted a thorough assessment of the damage and approached the subsequent work with the seriousness and care it requires.

A project with a future

Conserving and restoring some of the most remarkable features of this building makes a significant contribution to its memory, history and identity. With the project completed on time, ERA Arqueologia leaves a lasting legacy for future generations.

Throughout the process, we shared the progress with the community, raising awareness of the importance of safeguarding our collective heritage. We took our followers on a journey through the past and the world of art, demonstrating that heritage conservation is a mission for us all.

A special thank you

A huge thank you to the entire ERA team who made this mission possible. The professionalism, dedication and rigour of each team member were fundamental to the project’s success.
