17/09/2026 - Mission accomplished in Sagres: Restoration of the Fortress completed
In the past month, ERA Arqueologia has completed two significant projects at two iconic Portuguese heritage sites. After completing work on the 'Capelas Imperfeitas' at the Monastery of Batalha, our team has now finished the conservation and restoration of Sagres Fortress, a project commissioned by Património Cultural, I.P.
The work focused on stonework and plasterwork — the stone elements and the mortar that covers and protects the structure — always using methodologies compatible with the historic materials and respecting the monument's authenticity. Each step was preceded by technical analysis and carried out rigorously by a large team of dedicated professionals.
Restoration work at Sagres Fortress involves challenging weather conditions, such as strong winds, rain, salt-laden air, and temperature fluctuations, which regularly affect the materials. At the same time, this work carries the important responsibility of preserving a heritage site of exceptional value.

ERA's Mário Vilhena explained that "we began by washing the entire surface. The old renders were chipped away, followed by the process of dashing, re-rendering and then painting, so that it looks almost as good as new again." Regarding the demands of the restoration work, he emphasised that "we have the walls overlooking the sea, on a steep slope; in terms of scaffolding and access, it is a challenge."
Through this project, ERA Arqueologia is ensuring the preservation of Sagres Fortress for future generations, helping it to stand the test of time and tell its story.
